Imagine how excited I was when I found out that Daylight Savings Time starts THIS WEEKEND! That is reason for celebration.
Recall that George Bush, in an effort to save energy, moved Daylight Savings Time way back to March. Pretty much that's the one good thing that I think Bush will be remembered for.
Politics aside, starting on Sunday March 9th, it's back to more daylight hours. I, for one, think that means more outdoor happy hours...
With that in mind, here's the last weekend of things to do in the dark after 5:30pm...
Friday, March 6:
JazzFest Denver. DPAC Seawell Ballroom. 1050 13th Street. 5pm to ?? (both Friday and Saturday) 40$ to 80$. JazzFest in Denver? you might be saying. Yes, it's true. AND, you will have to pay for this one. It's a TWO DAY Jazz Fest in a cabaret setting atop the Denver Performing Arts Center. Looks like there will be a wide variety of different jazz styles to choose from. Check out the DPAC website for more info. FANCY....
Fashion Denver Trunk Show. Fashion Denver. 321 W. 11th Avenue. 6pm to 9pm. FREE! Looking to update your wardrobe with something stylish, hip and new? Looking to hob-nob with young and fashionable hipsters? Head on down to Fashion Denver's trunk show this Friday instead of the hustle and bustle of First Friday. See what the kids are wearing. Buy something new for your wardrobe. Free snacks and beverages.
Flush of Color: Sean Gillespie Sculpture Opening. Jaz B Studios. 8th Avenue just west of Santa Fe. 6pm to 10pm. FREE! I am SO excited for this up and coming sculptor's opening night (I have a bias towards sculpture)!! Besides that fact that Sean is a way cool, fun and nice person, he's also a gorgeously brilliant sculptor. Head over to Jaz B Studios and join the party. Say hi to Sean and tell him Things to Do sent you!! FREE wine and snacks provided. I'll be there too to shake your hand.
L'Avventura: Open Shelf Films at the Museum of Contemporary Art. MCA. 15th and Delgany. 7:30pm. Free to members. Cost of admission to guests. I LOVE the MCA. I'm a member, which means that I get invited to ALL the funky events, talks and cocktail parties and you don't. Being a member at the MCA and The Denver Art Museum gives you MAJOR access to a world of interesting arts-related events. Grab a buddy and get a Dual membership at each of these cultural institutions for a lot less than you think. This Friday, on the top floor in the "Idea Box" (very comfy), lounge on bean bags with a cocktail and watch this fancy film. Very hip.
Orangepeel Moses Benefit Show. Tequila Factory. 9th and Santa Fe. 9pm on...10$ suggested donation. Alright, so how many times have you gone to First Friday and wondered what to do once the galleries close? Head on over to the new Tequila Factory for this fabulously funky benefit show, featuring Friends in Stereo, live dj's and an "affordable" silent auction. Sure to be some interesting folks there..including me.
Saturday, March 8:
I Believe I am a Camera: Double Feature Film Event, Part of EyeBelieve: the Independent Filmmakers Competition. Denver Public Library Conference Room B2. 11am. FREE! Coolio. This is the first in a series of Saturday morning independent films at the Denver Public Library. Skip brunch and take in a flick this Saturday!
Let There Be Light Session 1: Electrical Basics. Workshop for Women. 47 W. Alameda. 1pm to 4pm. Call for price. Ladies. This is a basic woman-taught course on electrical issues in the home. It's a two part series, so sign up for both. In these ever-changing times, ladies, we must step up and learn how to not only bring home the bacon, but also re-wire our at-home offices. Empower thyself and check out www.workshopforwomen.com for all sorts of courses!!!
Building Creative Businesses Expo. Wellington Webb Municipal Offices. 201 W. Colfax. 10am to 4pm. 5 clams. For those of you who were actually looking, I screwed up the date on this one and included it in my last Things to Do (so sorry...). Well, for real, it's happening this weekend and if you're a new, old or aspiring artist, this is the event for you. Find out how to legitimately run your creative business. Very helpful workshops are scheduled throughout the day, as well as opportunities for networking with other artists and finding out about the world of resources that exist to help you succeed as an artist.
Wild Wiggle Tanja Workshop for Women and Men. Vital Yoga Studios. 4342 Tennyson St., 7:30pm to 9:30pm. Prices varies depending on if you're single or a couple. Go to www.wildwiggle.com to register. You might be wondering: "what the heck is a tanja?" From what I've been told, it's a very powerful way to create intimacy, sexual healing and love with yourself and/or your partner. Take a chance (and yourself) on this one and do something good for yourself and your relationships! Ellie Pope and Dan Powers lead a very interactive, yet safe and nurturing tanja session. You must pre-register for this online at www.wildwiggle.com.
Sunday, March 9:
Breakfast at Zaidy's. Zaidy's Deli and Restaurant. 1512 Larimer. 6:30am to 3pm. YUMMY! is all I have to say about Zaidy's. It's Denver's best-kept secret (not anymore) for a delicious diner style breakfast experience without the usual gigantic Sunday breakfast crowds. I've NEVER had to wait for a table at Zaidy's downtown location on a Sunday. They have AWESOME potato latkes, lox bagel plates and I just tried the Reuben Omelet, which sounds gross but is fantastic. Unlimited tasty coffee is a major plus.
